Writing is both a passion and an alternative format of creative expression.

As with design, my most useful skill is the ability to listen. I truly enjoy people and find joy in translating the words I hear into a colourful portrait that paints a picture of the speaker.

Of course, the other reason I went back to school to take journalism is because I wanted to ask the hard questions, not rewrite a press release. I wanted to raise accountability and give readers the benefit of the whole picture.

After working in the free press for a couple of years – literally starving my children – and having a blast doing it, I caved to their cries of hunger and abandonment and got a job that utilized both design and editorial capabilities. It wasn't the free press, but the move did put a halt to the symphony of complaints.

"Journalists are supposed to be skeptical,
that's what keeps them digging
rather than
simply accepting
the official line,
whether it comes from government
or corporate bureaucrats."
