Writing is both a passion and an alternative format of creative expression.
As with design, my most useful skill is the ability to listen. I truly enjoy people and find joy in translating the words I hear into a colourful portrait that paints a picture of the speaker.
Of course, the other reason I went back to school to take journalism is because I wanted to ask the hard questions, not rewrite a press release. I wanted to raise accountability and give readers the benefit of the whole picture.
After working in the free press for a couple of years literally starving my children and having a blast doing it, I caved to their cries of hunger and abandonment and got a job that utilized both design and editorial capabilities. It wasn't the free press, but the move did put a halt to the symphony of complaints.
